Top 10 new features from Apple’s next Mac OS X Mountain Lion

Posted in IPhone App Programming on February 18th, 2012 by Admin

In a very un-Apple fashion the Cupertino company yesterday released the developer preview of the next version of its Desktop operating system, which will carry the name OS X Mountain Lion. As you will see from this top 10 new features Mountain Lion is heavily influenced by iOS.

Here are the top 10 features from the OS X Mountain Lion preview.

1) Login to the cloud - With Mountain Lion, iCloud gets even more love from Apple,  you can now use your Apple ID to login to your Mac. After you have logged in iCloud will automatically synchronize all your emails, documents, photos and contacts. And just the same way that iCloud works today, any changes made on the Mac are instantly reflected across all your devices – iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. This is great news for those who own several Apple devices.

2) Messages - With Messages Apple is pretty much killing the iChat. iPhone and iPad users will already be familiar with Messages. Whats great is that you can add chat via your AIM/ Google Talk/ Yahoo! account or send unlimited message to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users using iMessage – for free! It also features attachment support, delivery reports, read receipts etc.
Messages can be downloaded as a beta version today, it can be downloaded from the following link.

3) Reminders - An all new Reminders app that syncs to your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch via iCloud. If you are anything like me you will also forget a whole bunch of important things. This new app for Mountain Lion means you can add new reminders or check up on the reminders you have from the desktop. Thanks to  iCloud support all your reminders are automatically synced to your iPhone.

4) Notes - A lot of us have been waiting for this update, even though Notes isn’t new per se, the changes to Notes in Mountain Lion is that its broken free from the Mail app into its own app to parallel the Notes app in iOS. Now you can make notes as an when you want and even stick them to the desktop to help you remember them a little more clearly. These notes will also be synched with your iOS Devices.

5) Notification Center - Perhaps our favourite feature is an iOS style Notification Center. Mac OS X will be the first OS X release to have a built-in Notification Center that lets you stay on top of things. The Mac OS X Notification center is very similar to the iOS version. Working like the Notification drag down bar in iOS, users will be able to access a panel to the right of their desktop at any time to see what the latest notifications are.

6) Share Sheets - Share Sheets are heavily inspired by the share button seen across the Web. A handy way of emailing links or posting videos to Youtube, we believe you will use this feature more often than you can probably think right now. Sharing your content has never been so easy.
Share_Sheets_Mountain_Lion.jpg

7) Twitter - Twitter integration is another feature that’s straight from iOS. Operating System level support for Twitter accounts that lets you sign-in once and tweet from any application, will be very useful. In the same way Twitter is everywhere on your iPhone or iPad, Apple has added the blue bird in a similar way here.

8) Game Center - If you enjoy playing games then this is great news for you. Apple is bringing the Game Center from iOS to Mountain Lion, allowing users to find friends to play with, check out their leaderboard stats and achievements gained. What is interesting is that  it will allow you to play other Game Center users regardless of what device they are on.

9) Airplay - Airplay Mirroring is as easy as on iOS. With an Apple TV hooked up to a television set, Air Play lets you mirror your Mac on a HDTV or simply stream the movie playing on your Mac to the TV.
Airplay_Mountain_Lion.jpg

10) Gatekeeper - Gatekeeper is designed make your Mac more secure. It gives you the ability to run your Mac in 3 different modes. The first one lets you download and install any app you want, just like OS X Lion. The second lets you run apps from the Mac App Store and apps with a Developer ID. The third mode restricts your Mac to only apps from the Mac App Store.

What feature are you most excited about? Let us know in the comments!

Preparing for an app launch – interview with Leap founder

Posted in IPhone App Programming on February 6th, 2012 by Admin

We are happy to introduce our new guest blogger Andreas Kambanis of iPhone App Rockstar.

———————————————————————————————

If there was a video titled ìStuff iPhone developers say one of the typical phrases would be I saw it in the featured apps. We are used to hearing about app success stories post launch, but we rarely get a chance to glimpse inside the pre-launch stages that decide whether an app is a runaway success, or doomed to gather rust in the unvisited depths of the app store.

With that in mind, I wanted to dive in to a story that is unfolding as you read this sentence. The story of the Leap app. An app which I predict, will soon be hitting the big time in the app store.

I reached out to the Leap founder to discuss the pre-launch strategies that they are using to guarantee that they crush it with their app launch. What follows is an shortened transcription of the interview, along with some additional notes.

First of all a little background..

Leap is an app that allows you to create challenges with your Facebook friends. You document these challenges by taking pictures and you earn points on your progress.

The team behind it consists of James Dickerson, who is the co-founder I spoke to, Nick Cramer is the designer and Ryan Tinker is the developer.

Q: How are you generating interest before your launch?

James Dickerson: Our landing page is very important for collecting user information. We built our own custom page since we have a designer and a coder but you can easily use Launch Rock. Which a lot of start-ups are using.

What we’ve done is identify niches that we want to focus on for our launch. We’ve contacted various health blogs and people in the health community. Told them about our app and directed them to our page. They agreed to share Leap with their users once the app is ready. We are going to have a nice base of people to get the app once it is launched.

We focused on the health community and then we focused on the tech community. We ordered out a list of 50 blogs from small, medium and large. It’s much easier to get attention from the small blogs first, before moving on to the big guys.

We’ve drafted up a sample email with screenshots of the app, a picture of the team and a 5-10 sentence description of the application. Then we emailed them and said weíd love to be featured in the blog, here’s some content you can use, then it doesn’t take them much time to create an article about your app.

Once you start getting some traction on the small blogs, you can use that as a good example to pitch medium size blogs and then the bigger ones.

Key takeaways: You need a page that collects users information prior to your launch. When your app finally makes it in to the app store, you then have a list of interested users to help you hit the ground running. These initial users will help boost your app through the ranks and vastly improve its chances of being featured by Apple. Setting up a landing page is easy using a service such as Launch Rock or Launch Effect App.

To build your list of interested users donít just head straight for the huge app blogs. Pick blogs within the niche that your app targets, start small and work your way up. The Leap app currently has an email list of over 800 people who are interested in downloading the app when it launches.

Q: How do you make your message stand out?

JD: If you think about most of the submissions, somebody is probably just typing in a short couple of sentences, a website and being pretty self promoting. If you take the time to craft a nice email, link to a couple of examples where the application has been featured before and convey the message that the readers will be interested in it and itís something new and different I think it will stand out from the other submissions.

Key takeaways: Rather than sending off a generic email, take the time to craft something a little more personal and think about what you can offer the blogger or journalist, as opposed to just what they can offer you.

Q: What has the response been like?

JD: A great response from some of the bloggers. In fact, one of the bloggers is a New York Times best selling author who focuses on health challenges for his readership. I reached out to him and said there’s no app out there thatís allowing your readers to do these challenges together and I think your community would really love this. I didnít try to pitch him right away, I just said let me know if youíd like any more information. Low and behold that worked really well and it was a big win for us.

Key takeaways: I’ve personally seen a far bigger jump in downloads when mentioned in a popular blog, as opposed to getting a two page spread in a huge cycling magazine. Others are reporting the same thing and this example by James shows how following this pre-launch strategy can get your app in front of some really big audiences.

Q: Let’s zoom ahead a little to the launch day. Have you set an exact day for launch and what will you be doing on that day?

When the app is completed we are going to set a day to let everyone know it is ready. Once we’ve got that date set we are going to target the big dogs such as TechCrunch and VentureBeat. Weíll probably give them a week and a half to two weeks notice.

On the launch day itself weíll be using Mixpanel that we have hooked in to the site and the app, so that we can monitor live how many people are using the app. We really want to be talking to users and asking them what can be improved.

Weíll probably have some friends come over, get them to download the app and see how they interact with it.

Key takeaways: As you reach your launch day, step things up a few notches and contact the bigger players. With all the proof you’ll have from the smaller blogs, they’ll be more likely to feature you. When the launch day comes around try to spot any potential problems as they arise by interacting with your eyes on social networks.

Also, make sure you are enlisting your friends and looking over their shoulder to see how they use the app. You’ll gain really valuable feedback for your next version.

Apple finally updates Final Cut Pro X with multicam editing

Posted in IPhone App Programming on February 2nd, 2012 by Admin

Yesterday Apple released a much anticipated update to its Final Cut Pro X video editing software. What makes this update so much better than the previous ones is the fact that Apple has finally decided to include two much need features, these include multicam editing and broadcast monitoring. Users can also finally import layered Adobe Photoshop files.

As most readers might remember when Apple first released Final Cut Pro X last summer as a digital download exclusively on the Mac App Store, it was met with very harsh criticism, ultimately leading to Apple blocking reviews on the Mac App Store. Furthermore the company even ended up issuing refunds to disgruntled customers.

As always the Final Cut Pro X 10.0.3 update is free for anyone that owns Final Cut Pro X, otherwise it can be downloaded for 9 from the Mac App Store. Other updates include Compressor 4.0.2 that lets you customize output settings, work faster with distributed encoding and tap into a comprehensive set of delivery features and Motion 5.0.2 which allows users to customize Final Cut Pro titles, transitions and effects, with 2D/3D animations using real-time feedback.

Those who are interested can read the full press review below:

CUPERTINO, California—January 31, 2012—Apple® today released Final Cut Pro® X v10.0.3, a significant update to its revolutionary professional video editing application, which introduces multicam editing that automatically syncs up to 64 angles of video and photos; advanced chroma keying for handling complex adjustments right in the app; and enhanced XML for a richer interchange with third party apps and plug-ins that support the fast growing Final Cut Pro X ecosystem. Available today as a free update from the Mac® App Store™, Final Cut Pro X v10.0.3 also includes a beta of broadcast monitoring that supports Thunderbolt devices as well as PCIe cards.

Final Cut Pro X v10.0.3 includes a collection of groundbreaking new tools for editing multicam projects. Final Cut Pro X automatically syncs clips from your shoot using audio waveforms, time and date, or timecode to create a Multicam Clip with up to 64 angles of video, which can include mixed formats, frame sizes and frame rates. The powerful Angle Editor allows you to dive into your Multicam Clip to make precise adjustments, and the Angle Viewer lets you play back multiple angles at the same time and seamlessly cut between them.

Final Cut Pro X builds upon its robust, one-step chroma key with the addition of advanced controls including color sampling, edge adjustment and light wrap. You can tackle complex keying challenges right in Final Cut Pro X, without having to export to a motion graphics application, and view your results instantly with realtime playback.

In the seven months since launch, the third party ecosystem around Final Cut Pro X has expanded dramatically. XML-compatible software like DaVinci Resolve and CatDV provide tight integration for tasks such as color correction and media management. The new 7toX app from Intelligent Assistance uses XML to import Final Cut Pro 7 projects into Final Cut Pro X. In addition, some of the industry’s largest visual effects developers, including GenArts and Red Giant, have developed motion graphics plug-ins that take advantage of the speed and real-time preview capabilities of Final Cut Pro X.

Broadcast monitoring in Final Cut Pro X is currently in beta and allows you to connect to waveform displays, vectorscopes, and calibrated, high-quality monitors to ensure that your project meets broadcast specifications. Final Cut Pro X supports monitoring of video and audio through Thunderbolt I/O devices, as well as through third party PCIe cards.

Pricing & Availability
Final Cut Pro X v10.0.3 is available from the Mac App Store for 9.99 (US) to new users, or as a free update for existing Final Cut Pro X customers. A 30-day free trial of Final Cut Pro X is available at www.apple.com/finalcutpro/trial. Full system requirements and more information on Final Cut Pro X can be found at www.apple.com/finalcutpro.

Apple appoints John Browett as New Senior Vice President of Retail

Posted in IPhone App Programming on February 1st, 2012 by Admin

Apple announced earlier today that John Browett will be joining the company as their new Senior Vice President of Retail. Browett will be leaving his current position as CEO of Dixons Retail. According to the Press Release:

Apple today announced that John Browett will join the company as senior vice president of Retail, reporting to Apple CEO Tim Cook. Browett comes to Apple from European technology retailer Dixons Retail, where he has been CEO since 2007. Beginning in April, he will be responsible for Apple’s retail strategy and the continued expansion of Apple retail stores around the world.

“Our retail stores are all about customer service, and John shares that commitment like no one else we’ve met,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We are thrilled to have him join our team and bring his incredible retail experience to Apple.”

Browett will be replacing Ron Johnson who as some readers might remember left Apple for J.C. Penny in November. Ron Johnson has been credited as being the driving force behind Apple’s massive success in their retail initiative, so it will be interesting to see is John Browett can fill Johnson’s shoes.

This is the second part in the series of 2 tutorials on how to create custom designs for your iPhone app. You can view Part 1 here. In this tutorial, we shall design a ViewController similar to the image below. The ViewController will have a custom UIBarButtonItem that replaces the standard back button and a transparent UINavigationBar that allows some of the underlying view to show through.

At the end of this post, you will be able to download the sample project that was used in the videos. Let’s get right to it.

Video 4: Adding Tap Gestures

In this video, I will add some tap gestures to the sub views at the bottom so when they are tapped, a new ViewController is pushed into the screen. You can change the way the ViewController is displayed using different animation styles. For this tutorial, we will use the standard slide-in animation.

Video 5 : Designing a Custom ViewController

In this video, you will learn how to design a custom UIViewController that shows a cover image for an article. The designs used are a subset of the Newsreader iPhone App Design Template. It will also have some metadata about the author, and the date the article was published. This new View will have a transparent navigation bar which you will see in the next video. Note: The video starts off resized and you may not be able to see much. Please wait until about 30 seconds into it and it will be correctly resized.

Video 6: Creating a Custom UIBarButtonItem and a Transparent UINavigationBar.

Talk about saving the best for last. If you have always wanted to spruce up your Navigation Bar, this is how to do it. This video will teach you how to create a transparent UINavigationBar and the custom back button. You can download the resources from this link.

A5 jailbreak ‘Absinthe’ lands on almost 1M iDevices in the first 3 days

Posted in IPhone App Programming on January 25th, 2012 by Admin

Wow this must really give Apple something to think about, perhaps it is time to listen to the jailbreak community and start implementing their ideas in the next iOS update. according to 9to5Mac.com just three days after the release of  “Absinthe,” the much anticipated free unteathered jailbreak tool for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2, the site announced that 1 million people jailbroke their A5 device in under three days.

Those numbers are pretty amazing, the reason why the Chronic-Dev team can pinpoint the exact numbers is that Cydia, the app marketplace that comes with the jailbreak offers some pretty neat statistical data. According to the team the jailbreak was installed 491,325 on an iPhone 4S; 308,967 on an iPad 2; and, 152,940 on an iPad 2 that had been previously jailbroken (iOS 4).

Like always, the Chronic-Dev team reminds you not upgrade off of 5.0.1 if you intend to keep the jailbreak. For those looking to jailbreak their device you can find the tools needed here.

Did you jailbreak your A5 device this weekend?

Overflow adds cover flow effect to iOS dock (Jailbreak only)

Posted in IPhone App Programming on January 19th, 2012 by Admin

While we don’t officially condone jailbreaking we still want to bring you the latest news from the jailbreak community.

Thanks to App Store and jailbreak developer Adam Bell iOS owners can now bring the much beloved Cover Flow effect to their docks. The tweak Overflow works with Infinidock and Springtomize in order to allow you to easily scroll through docked apps like album covers in the iPod player.

What is interesting about this tweak is that it changes the whole User Interface of the iPhone, while this has been common on Android phones for a while it is just now that developers are starting to change the UI of the iPhone.

In order to be able to use Overflow you need to install several tweaks as mentioned above, first you need a tweak that allows more than 4 apps in the dock, for this Infinitidock works just as expected. Once you start adding apps to your dock you will realize that Overflow is a pretty cool way to scroll through the list of apps.

Overflow is available in Cydia for .99.

Here is a video of Overflow in action:
